Online Workshop

Facilitated by Meg Hayertz

When a character plays, we experience their style of interacting with the world around them. If they play a team sport, we notice the skills, expectations and defenses they bring to community. The way a character plays can also be the way they participate in revolutions, work meetings, or family dynamics, as well as how they go about pursuing the elixir of their hero's journey.

Where in your characters' lives do they feel safe to play? Where to we meet them at their most open? Where do they not feel safe, and where are the in-between places? Particularly for hardened characters who have had to compartmentalize their sense of play, a rare glimpse of their playfulness reveals their private, mysterious inner world and their relationship with life itself.

In this workshop, we'll read excerpts full of games and play from novels and short stories. We'll write about our characters playing in various situations, and we'll consider what their styles of play indicate about their character arc and how play might elevate the possibilities for the peak scenes in your manuscript.

If your writing is feeling stilted or if you’re getting bored of your story, this workshop will infuse new energy into your writing so you can stay in the flow and make satisfying progress on your manuscript! The element of surprise will guide us to exactly what we need.
